Scenario: A new office requires 48 desk outlets, wireless access points, VoIP phones and IP cameras.

The design works backwards from outlet locations to patch panels and switches. Permanent horizontal cabling is kept separate from replaceable patch leads. Cable category, shielding requirements, PoE use, pathways, labelling and rack termination are decided before installation.

Verification: Completed links are tested and documented. A simple continuity result should not be confused with certification against a cabling performance standard.

Common mistakes and selection checklist

  • Treating patch leads, permanent horizontal cable and installation cable as interchangeable.
  • Ignoring cable length, termination quality, pathway separation and PoE heat considerations.
  • Calling a basic continuity test a certification test.

What happens if you get it wrong?

A link can pass simple pin-to-pin continuity yet still fail to deliver the expected Ethernet performance. Poor labelling and termination also make faults expensive to locate later.

Selection checklist

  • Choose the cable category and shielding approach for the required application.
  • Keep permanent links and patch leads within the intended structured-cabling design.
  • Use compatible jacks, patch panels and termination methods.
  • Label both ends and document outlet-to-panel mapping.
  • Test installed links to the level required by the project.

Continuity and wire map

A basic tester can identify open circuits, shorts, reversals and split-pair wiring depending on the tool.

Qualification

A qualifier estimates whether an installed link can support a particular network technology. It provides more useful performance information than continuity alone.

Certification

A cable certifier measures the installed link against the limits of a cabling standard and produces documented pass or fail results.

Document the result

Label each cable and retain test results linked to the outlet, patch panel port and physical location. This makes faults and future changes easier to manage.
