COMMISSIONING

Network Infrastructure Commissioning and Acceptance Playbook

How to prove that a new installation works under the conditions the client actually bought it for.

Power-on is not commissioning

Commissioning is proof, not just power-on
Install Configure Measure Prove H/O If you cannot prove the result, commissioning is incomplete

Commissioning converts an installation into evidence. The installer proves the physical layer, configuration, performance and failure behaviour that were part of the project scope.

Physical acceptance

  • Rack/equipment securely installed.
  • Correct rail fit and service clearance.
  • Cable IDs match schedules.
  • Copper and fibre results complete.
  • Fibre connectors inspected/cleaned before final mating.
  • Power feeds match the power schedule.

Switching acceptance

  • Access ports in intended VLANs.
  • Trunk allowed lists verified.
  • STP root and blocked/forwarding paths understood.
  • LACP members active.
  • PoE budget and critical powered ports verified.
  • Interface errors stable under load.

WiFi acceptance

  • Representative-client coverage measurements.
  • Busy-area channel utilisation reviewed.
  • Roaming paths tested.
  • AP uplinks and PoE state checked.

UPS acceptance

  • Actual protected load recorded.
  • UPS operates without overload.
  • Controlled utility-loss test completed where permitted.
  • Critical network path remains available for the required test duration.

Failure testing

Where redundancy was sold, test it. Disconnect one LACP member, one redundant uplink or one approved power path at a time and confirm the intended service survives. Do not create unsafe electrical conditions or bypass site procedures.

Acceptance evidence pack

Include final diagrams, configuration backups, test results, fault/deviation list, photographs and a signed acceptance record where the project requires it.

Client benefit

The customer receives proof that the design was actually tested rather than only installed. That reduces arguments later and creates a baseline for future troubleshooting.
