UPS AND POWER

UPS Topologies: Standby, Line-Interactive and Online Double Conversion

Choose UPS topology from the load, power quality, transfer behaviour, runtime, management and availability requirement rather than VA rating alone.

What this chapter should help you do

Understand the design choices, recognise the information that must be checked on the actual product, avoid common selection mistakes, and produce a requirement that can be matched to suitable hardware.

PRODUCT EDUCATIONFIELD PRACTICEMODEL-SPECIFIC CHECKS

1. A UPS solves more than one problem

A UPS can provide short-term battery power and may also regulate or condition incoming power depending on topology. Define whether the requirement is graceful shutdown, ride-through, generator bridging or continuous protection for critical infrastructure.

2. Standby/offline

Standby designs normally feed the load from utility power and transfer to inverter/battery operation when required. They can suit less critical loads, but exact transfer and conditioning behaviour is model-specific.

3. Line-interactive

Line-interactive UPS systems commonly include automatic voltage regulation and can correct some voltage variation without using the battery. They are widely used for network and server loads where the product capability matches the requirement.

4. Online double conversion

Online double-conversion systems continuously process power through the conversion path in normal operation, isolating the output from many input disturbances. They are commonly selected for more critical infrastructure, but efficiency, heat, bypass and installation requirements must be considered.

5. Bypass

Static and maintenance bypass functions can keep a load powered under particular UPS conditions. Understand whether the selected model includes bypass, how it operates and whether maintenance can be performed without shutting the load down.

6. VA and watts

UPS products are rated in VA and watts. The connected load must fit within both relevant limits. Do not size from VA alone.

7. Topology is not runtime

Runtime depends on battery energy, load and product design. Two UPS units with the same VA rating can have very different runtime characteristics.

8. Selection checklist

  • Record the exact model and firmware/software level.
  • Verify physical interfaces and supported media.
  • Confirm power, cooling and environmental requirements.
  • Test the intended workload, not only basic connectivity.
  • Record baseline measurements and configuration.
  • Label and document the installation for future fault finding.

Field application and acceptance

This section turns the technical concepts above into a repeatable procurement, installation and handover process.

Field design workflow

Inventory every load that must remain powered, measure or estimate real watts, define required runtime and identify which equipment must shut down gracefully. Choose topology and UPS family, then design input circuit, output distribution, rack position, monitoring and maintenance path. Verify runtime using manufacturer data for the selected model and battery configuration.

Questions to answer before ordering

  • What are the real watt and VA requirements?
  • How many minutes of runtime are required at that load?
  • Is line-interactive or online double conversion required?
  • Which input and output connectors are needed?
  • Rack or tower, and what weight/rail requirements apply?
  • Is network management or graceful shutdown required?
  • Are external batteries or maintenance bypass required?
  • What is the battery replacement and test plan?

Fault-finding method

Check input power, UPS operating state, load percentage, battery status, event log and output before replacing batteries. An overload, failed input circuit, exhausted battery or internal UPS fault can present differently. For unexpected runtime, compare actual load with the runtime model and check battery age, temperature and self-test results.

Operational documentation

Record UPS model, serial, firmware, input circuit, load, connected PDU/equipment, battery installation date, network address, alert recipients, shutdown sequence and maintenance dates. Label bypass and A/B paths clearly.

What correct looks like

The UPS operates within load limits, runtime meets the agreed objective, battery/self-test status is healthy, alerts are received, graceful shutdown has been tested where required, rack ventilation is adequate and technicians can identify exactly which equipment will lose power if any UPS or PDU is isolated.
